How many HIV cases are there in Fiji?
Fiji recorded 2,016 new HIV cases in 2025, the highest annual number since reporting began, according to the Fiji HIV Surveillance Report 2025 from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services. By the end of 2025 Fiji had reported a cumulative total of 5,676 cases. New cases rose from 245 in 2022 to 415 in 2023 and 1,583 in 2024.
The figures count cases diagnosed and reported, so wider testing raises them as well as new infections do. The ministry links the rise to expanded testing, better reporting and ongoing transmission, and declared an HIV outbreak in 2025. The report breaks cases down by division, age and sex.
What is the life expectancy in Fiji?
Life expectancy at birth in Fiji was 67.5 years in 2024, according to World Bank data updated on 8 October 2026. The same source puts infant mortality at 23.5 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2024.
These are modelled estimates drawn from UN population data, not counts from Fiji's own registers. The Fiji Bureau of Statistics publishes registered births and deaths in its vital statistics section, including the National Vital Statistics Report 2020-2022, and its homepage shows 9,117 deaths in 2023. Life expectancy shows how long a baby born now would live if today's death rates stayed the same.
How much does Fiji spend on health?
Fiji's 2026-2027 budget provides $647 million for the health sector, of which $477 million goes to the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, according to the 2026-2027 Budget Address. The ministry's allocation pays the salaries of doctors, nurses and allied health staff, medicines and medical supplies, and biomedical equipment.
The sector total is wider than the ministry alone and covers other health-related spending across government. Line-by-line amounts are in the Budget Estimates on the Ministry of Finance's budget documents page. Budget figures are plans; spending outturns appear later in the fiscal performance reports.
