Foreign nationals made up 35.3% of Liechtenstein's 41,237 residents at the end of 2025, according to Office of Statistics data in the Government's Wirtschafts- und Finanzdaten 2026. The largest groups were Swiss (26.8% of foreign residents), Austrian (16.4%), German (13.8%), Italian (8.3%) and Portuguese (4.5%).

The population grew by 351 people (0.9%) in 2025. Since 2024 the statistics also count people given protection because of the war in Ukraine and people in the asylum process as part of the permanent population, which explains part of the rise in 2024. The Migration and Passport Office issues residence permits; Liechtenstein has been an associated member of Schengen and Dublin since 2011, as the same brochure notes.

80 first-time asylum applications were made in Liechtenstein in 2025, according to Eurostat's annual asylum table (migr_asyappctza), updated 3 September 2026. The total was 75 in 2024 and 70 in both 2022 and 2023.

Eurostat rounds asylum figures to the nearest five, so small changes for Liechtenstein should not be over-read.
