What are Greece's CO2 emissions?
Greece emitted 52.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2024, excluding land use and forestry, up from 51.2 million tonnes in 2023 and down from 55.1 million in 2022, according to the World Bank.
With a population of about 10.4 million, that is roughly 5 tonnes per person. This counts CO2 only; other greenhouse gases such as methane are reported separately. Greece's official greenhouse gas inventory is compiled by the Ministry of Environment and Energy, whose website blocked automated access on 15 October 2026.
How much of Greece's energy is renewable?
Renewables supplied 26.9% of Greece's gross final energy consumption in 2025 and 60.9% of its electricity, according to Eurostat. The electricity share was 51.2% in 2024 and 42.4% in 2022.
The electricity share counts solar, wind, hydro and biomass. The energy share is lower because it also covers transport and heating, which rely more on oil. The figures follow the EU renewable energy directive's accounting rules.
How clean is the air in Greece?
People in Greece were exposed to an average of 14.1 micrograms of fine particles (PM2.5) per cubic metre of air in 2023, down from 16.3 in 2022, according to the World Bank.
The figure is a modelled, population-weighted annual average. The World Health Organization's guideline for annual exposure is 5 micrograms. Local readings vary by place and season. Station readings are published by the Ministry of Environment and Energy, whose site blocked automated access on 15 October 2026.
