INEGI: official statistics for Mexico
INEGI (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía) is Mexico's autonomous national statistics and geography agency. It runs the population census and Intercensal Survey, publishes the INPC consumer price index, GDP, the ENOE employment survey, the ENIGH household income survey and, since 2025, the official multidimensional poverty measure. It also runs crime victimisation surveys and vital statistics on births and deaths.
What it publishes
- The Population and Housing Census (2020) and the Intercensal Survey (2025).
- The national consumer price index (INPC), fortnightly and monthly.
- Quarterly GDP, a timely GDP estimate and the monthly IGAE economic activity index.
- ENOE: unemployment, informality and underemployment, monthly and quarterly.
- ENIGH household income and spending, and multidimensional poverty, every two years.
- Registered births and deaths, homicide statistics and the ENVIPE victimisation survey.

When it publishes
INEGI publishes a yearly calendar of releases. Each press release gives the date of the next one: for example, monthly INPC inflation for October 2026 is due on 9 November 2026, ENOE on 22 October 2026 and third-quarter GDP on 23 November 2026. Some INEGI pages return a 'page not found' message with a normal status, so check that a link opens the page you expect.
How to use it to check a claim
- For inflation, say whether a figure is fortnightly or monthly, annual or monthly change, and headline or core.
- For GDP, say whether growth is quarter on quarter (seasonally adjusted) or year on year, and whether it is the timely estimate.
- Read unemployment alongside informality and underemployment from the same ENOE release.
- For poverty, say multidimensional or income poverty, and the year; it is measured every two years.
- The Intercensal Survey is a sample survey, not a full census.
Common mistakes
- Comparing poverty measured by INEGI from 2024 with older CONEVAL series without checking the method notes.
- Treating ENIGH household income as an individual salary.
- Comparing INEGI homicides from death certificates with police-recorded crime from the SESNSP.
Is INEGI independent?
INEGI is an autonomous body under the constitution and coordinates the national system of statistical and geographic information.
Who measures poverty in Mexico?
