Mexico's election results: the INE
The National Electoral Institute (Instituto Nacional Electoral) organises federal elections in Mexico and, with state electoral bodies, local ones. It runs the preliminary results programme (PREP) and publishes the official district counts (cómputos distritales), the electoral roll statistics and audits of party finances. Disputes are decided by the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF).
What it publishes
- Official district counts for president, Senate and Chamber of Deputies.
- The PREP preliminary results on election night.
- Electoral roll (lista nominal) statistics.
- Party and campaign finance audits.
Key datasets
- Cómputos 2024
Official counts for the 2024 federal elections, by state, district and polling station.
- Election results
Index of official results for past elections.
APIs and downloads
- Cómputos 2024 national data fileMachine-readable national presidential totals behind the counts site.
When it publishes
Federal elections are held in June; the president serves six years and deputies three. The 2024 election was held on 2 June and the final national count file is dated 8 June 2024.
How to use it to check a claim
- Use the cómputos, not the PREP, for final vote totals.
- Say whether a share is of all votes cast or of valid votes.
- Chamber of Deputies seats combine 300 single-member districts and 200 proportional seats, so vote shares and seat shares differ.
Common mistakes
- Quoting the INE quick count (conteo rápido), a statistical estimate, as the result.
Who certifies Mexico's presidential election?
The Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF) rules on challenges and declares the presidential election valid.
