Statistics Indonesia (BPS): what it publishes and how to check it

Statistics Indonesia (Badan Pusat Statistik, BPS) is the national statistics agency. It publishes the consumer price index, GDP, the official poverty rate, the labour force survey, foreign trade and tourism statistics, and runs the population census and the National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas). Its website blocks automated requests, so figures are often easier to verify through Bank Indonesia's SEKI tables, which republish many BPS series.

When it publishes

BPS issues official statistics news releases (Berita Resmi Statistik) on fixed dates: inflation and tourism on the first working day of the month; trade around the middle of the month; GDP about five weeks after each quarter; poverty in July and January; unemployment in May and November.

How to use it to check a claim

  1. For poverty, distinguish the BPS national poverty rate from the World Bank's international lines.
  2. For growth, use the year-on-year figure BPS gives as its headline, and say which quarter it covers.
  3. For unemployment, say whether the figure is for February or August.
  4. When BPS cannot be opened, check the same series in Bank Indonesia's SEKI tables, which cite BPS.

Common mistakes

When does BPS publish inflation?
