How many Haitians are refugees or asylum seekers abroad?
180,702 Haitians were refugees in other countries at the end of 2025, and 236,318 more were asylum seekers awaiting a decision, according to UNHCR population statistics.
UNHCR counts people recognised as refugees, or in refugee-like situations, by their country of asylum. Asylum seekers are people whose claims have not yet been decided. Haitians living abroad on other permits, temporary protection or without status are not included. UNHCR publishes the figures each June in its Global Trends report and Refugee Data Finder.
How many people are displaced inside Haiti?
1,430,903 people were internally displaced in Haiti at the end of 2025, according to UNHCR population statistics.
UNHCR draws the internal displacement figure from the displacement tracking of the International Organization for Migration. Internally displaced people have fled their homes but remain inside the country, so they are not counted as refugees. BINUH reported that clashes between April and June 2026 forced more than 18,000 people to flee their homes in parts of the capital.
