Comoros: jobs and pay
14 answers, 5 from the Comoros's own official bodies, with a link to each figure.
What is the unemployment rate in the Comoros?
The unemployment rate in the Comoros was 6.5%, according to INSEED, which shows the figure on its homepage as coming from its 2022 survey of the informal economy (Enquête sur l'Économie Informelle). No more recent official unemployment rate was found on the INSEED site, checked on 15 October 2026.
The survey covered the informal economy, and a low unemployment rate does not by itself show how many people have formal jobs. Survey-based rates depend on the definition used, such as whether someone who did a few hours of work counts as employed. INSEED is preparing a new population census for 2027.
How many people work in farming in the Comoros?
The Comoros has 138,723 farm workers, 55% men and 45% women, according to INSEED's 2025 agricultural census (RGA-2). 68% of them say farming is their main activity, about 48% work full time and 52% part time.
46% of farms also run a non-farm business such as trade, services or transport. The census also found that 41% of farm workers have a bank account and 40% use mobile money. 38% of farm operators never went to school. These are counts from a census of farming households, so they are not directly comparable with labour force survey figures.
What share of adults in the Comoros work or look for work?
55.8% of people aged 15 and over in the Comoros were in the labour force in 2025, according to a modelled estimate from the International Labour Organization published by the World Bank. INSEED's EHCVM 2024 survey found participation rose in rural areas from 50.6% in 2020 to 55.0% in 2024, and was 49.4% in towns, down from 52.1%.
The ILO figure is a model estimate, not a direct survey count. INSEED notes that poor people, especially poor women, are more often outside the labour force. The labour force includes people who are working and people who are unemployed and looking for work.
What is youth unemployment in the Comoros?
8.8% of people aged 15 to 24 in the Comoros labour force were unemployed in 2025, according to a modelled estimate from the International Labour Organization published by the World Bank.
This is a model estimate, not the result of a recent Comoros labour force survey. Unemployment counts only young people who are looking for work, so those studying or not seeking work are excluded. INSEED's population projections note that a large group of young people aged 15 to 24 is now entering the labour market.
How many workers in the Comoros are self-employed or in family work?
56.8% of workers in the Comoros were in vulnerable employment in 2025, according to a modelled estimate from the International Labour Organization published by the World Bank.
Vulnerable employment means own-account workers and unpaid family workers, who are less likely to have formal contracts or social protection. The figure is a model estimate rather than a direct survey result.
