How much crime is there in Austria?

Police in Austria recorded 538,656 reported offences in 2025, 0.8% more than the 534,193 of 2024, according to the Bundeskriminalamt police crime statistics. The clearance rate was 53.6%.

The statistics count offences reported to or detected by the police, not all crime that takes place, so changes can reflect how often people report and how actively police investigate, as well as actual crime. An offence counts as cleared when police identify a suspect, not when a court convicts. Court results are published separately by Statistik Austria.

How many murders are there in Austria?

There were 74 victims of completed murders in Austria in 2025, 40 men and 34 women, according to the Bundeskriminalamt police crime statistics. Violent offences overall rose 2.2% to 88,133.

The murder count covers completed killings recorded as murder by police; attempted murders are counted separately. Violent crime is a wider group that includes assault, robbery and sexual offences. Because the number of murders is small, it can change noticeably from year to year, so trends are best read over several years.

How much cybercrime is there in Austria?

Police recorded 63,459 cybercrime offences in Austria in 2025, up from 62,328 in 2024, according to the Bundeskriminalamt police crime statistics.

The Bundeskriminalamt groups several kinds of offence under cybercrime, including attacks on computer systems (cybercrime in the narrow sense), internet fraud and online extortion. As with all police statistics, the figures count offences that were reported or detected, and many online offences are thought to go unreported. The report gives separate figures for each subcategory and for investment fraud.

How many people are convicted in Austrian courts?

Austrian criminal courts handed down 27,620 convictions of 25,195 people in 2025, according to Statistik Austria.

A person can be convicted more than once in a year, which is why convictions outnumber people. These court statistics count final judgements, so they cover far fewer cases than the police statistics: many reported offences are never cleared, and many cases end without a trial, for example through diversion or because charges are dropped.
