INDEC: official statistics for Argentina
INDEC (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos) is Argentina's national statistics office. It runs the population census (most recently 2022) and publishes the monthly consumer price index (IPC), the Permanent Household Survey (EPH) on jobs, income and poverty, quarterly GDP and the monthly activity estimator, the wage index and the basic food and total baskets. Each release comes as a technical report (informe técnico) in PDF with spreadsheets.
What it publishes
- The IPC consumer price index, monthly, for the whole country and six regions.
- Poverty and indigence in 31 urban areas, twice a year.
- EPH labour market indicators: activity, employment, unemployment and informality, quarterly.
- Quarterly GDP and the monthly economic activity estimator (EMAE).
- The wage index and the basic food and total baskets (CBA and CBT).
- The 2022 census and population projections to 2040.

When it publishes
INDEC publishes an advance calendar of reports for the year. For example, the September 2026 IPC was published on 13 October 2026, and the second-quarter 2026 labour market and GDP reports on 17 September 2026; poverty figures come out twice a year. How to use it to check a claim
- For inflation, say whether a figure is monthly, annual or since December, and national or regional.
- Poverty and EPH figures cover 31 urban areas, not the whole country.
- Compare poverty with the same half-year a year earlier as well as the previous half-year.
- For GDP, say whether growth is quarter on quarter (seasonally adjusted) or year on year.
- The wage index measures changes, not pay levels.
Common mistakes
- Comparing the current national IPC with older series; INDEC published only a Greater Buenos Aires index from June 2016 and extended coverage to the whole country from July 2017.
- Treating the monthly EMAE as final GDP.
How often is poverty measured in Argentina?
INDEC publishes poverty and indigence rates for each half-year, based on the EPH in 31 urban areas.
Is INDEC data free?
Yes. INDEC publishes its material under a Creative Commons licence unless stated otherwise.
