Vietnam: crime and justice
3 answers, 3 from Vietnam's own official bodies, with a link to each figure.
How many criminal cases are there in Vietnam?
79,791 criminal cases were instituted in Viet Nam in 2025, according to preliminary data in the National Statistics Office Statistical Summary Book 2025, down from 100,504 in 2024. 143,905 people were charged.
Instituting a case is the formal start of a criminal investigation, so the figure counts crimes investigated, not all crimes committed. 67,427 cases were prosecuted and 72,734 were brought to first-instance trial in 2025.
What is the murder rate in Vietnam?
Viet Nam recorded 1.5 intentional homicides per 100,000 people in 2011, the latest year in the World Bank World Development Indicators, which draw on UN Office on Drugs and Crime data.
No more recent homicide rate is published in the international series, so the figure is more than a decade old. The National Statistics Office publishes counts of criminal cases instituted, prosecuted and tried, but not homicides separately, in its statistical summary book. The UNODC data portal carries the series.
How many people die on Vietnam's roads?
7,166 people were killed in 11,549 traffic accidents in Viet Nam in the first nine months of 2026, according to the National Statistics Office, an average of 26 deaths a day. Deaths were 9.4% lower than in the same period of 2025.
The number of accidents fell 16.8% and the number injured 26.3%, according to the NSO's full report. In September alone there were 1,327 accidents and 782 deaths.
