What is the unemployment rate in Tuvalu?

Tuvalu's unemployment rate was 6.3% at the 2022 census, according to the Central Statistics Division's census report. Labour force participation was 43.0% and the employment-to-population ratio 40.3% among residents aged 15 and over.

The 2017 figure of 28.5% is not comparable, because the definition of unemployment changed, as the report notes. Unemployed people are those actively looking for work and available to start. The report finds no large gap between men and women, and higher youth unemployment in the outer islands than in Funafuti. In the 2022 household survey, 35% of people aged 15 and over reported employment as their main activity in the past week and 48% household duties.
