How fast are prices rising in Sudan?
Sudan's consumer price index stood at 708,510.8 in June 2026, against 468,354.7 in June 2025 and 100 in its 2007 base year, according to the Central Bank of Sudan's Economic and Financial Statistics Review for January to June 2026. That is a rise of 51.3% in a year.
The index fell slightly from 631,072.8 in December 2025 to 598,236.3 in February 2026, then rose each month to June. The annual rate was 187.8% in December 2024 and 70.4% in December 2025. An index of about 708,500 means the average basket that cost 100 pounds in 2007 cost about 708,500 pounds in June 2026. The Central Bureau of Statistics compiles the consumer price index, but its own website could not be reached on 15 October 2026.
What is the government doing about the cost of living in Sudan?
On 12 October 2026 the Prime Minister, Dr Kamil Idris, held an emergency meeting of the Government of Hope to study an urgent plan for austerity, cuts in government spending and measures to ease living costs, according to the Government of Sudan portal.
At the meeting the Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Trade said the ministry had set up eight discount sales outlets in Khartoum State, and that a project to sell bread at reduced prices would start soon in Khartoum and several other states. The portal did not give the planned spending cuts or price levels. Inflation was 51.3% in June 2026, according to the Central Bank of Sudan.
How much wheat does Sudan import?
Sudan imported US$646.2 million of wheat and wheat flour in 2025, and US$406.7 million in the first half of 2026, according to Sudan Customs figures in the Central Bank of Sudan's Economic and Financial Statistics Review for January to June 2026. Wheat imports were US$574.7 million in 2024 and US$1,132.5 million in 2022.
The figures are values in US dollars, not tonnes, so they rise and fall with world wheat prices as well as volumes. Because they are paid for in dollars, the pound's fall against the dollar raises their cost in pounds. Other food imports, excluding tea, coffee, spices, oils and lentils, were US$907.2 million in 2025. The 2026 figures are preliminary.
What is the poverty rate in Sudan?
46.5% of Sudan's people lived below the national poverty line in 2009, the latest national figure on World Bank Open Data, read on 15 October 2026. At the international line of US$3.00 a day (2021 prices), the latest figure is 10.1% in 2014.
Both figures come from household surveys carried out well before the conflict that began in April 2023, and before inflation reached triple digits in 2024, so they do not describe poverty today. No newer national poverty survey was found on official Sudanese sites checked on 15 October 2026. The international line measures extreme poverty, which is why it gives a lower share than the national line.
What are fuel prices in Sudan?

The central bank's review reports fuel only as an import value, not as pump prices.
