Regions of Sierra Leone: population and official figures

Sierra Leone is divided into 5 regions. The largest by population is Eastern Province with 1,943,610 people (25.7% of the total); the smallest is North West Province with 1,186,050. Population figures are from the 2021 Mid-Term Population and Housing Census, the latest count by Statistics Sierra Leone. Since 2017 the country has five regions: the old Northern Province was split into the Northern Province and the new North West Province (Kambia, Karene and Port Loko), which has its own page. Each region page adds August 2026 inflation from the consumer price index, poverty and electricity from the 2018 Integrated Household Survey, health, water and schooling from the 2019 Demographic and Health Survey, and schools and teachers from the 2025 Annual School Census.
