How much of Seychelles' electricity comes from renewable energy?
Seychelles reached its target of 5% of electricity demand from renewable energy after the 5MWp Ile de Romainville solar farm was energised in April 2021, according to the Public Utilities Corporation's renewable energy page. The national target is 15% by 2030.
The solar farm has nearly 15,000 panels and can produce 7 GWh a year, enough for about 2,000 homes; PUC says it doubled the country's renewable output. It works alongside the 6MWp Port Victoria wind farm, and a growing number of households and businesses have rooftop solar on a net tariff. PUC notes that Seychelles otherwise depends entirely on imported fossil fuel for its energy.
What are Seychelles' climate change targets?
Seychelles' revised nationally determined contribution, submitted in July 2021, pledges to cut economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 26.4% by 2030 compared with business as usual and to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, according to the UNDP Climate Promise summary for Seychelles.
On adaptation, the contribution covers coastal zones, water, agriculture, infrastructure, tourism and ecosystems, and includes protecting the blue economy, the economic use of the ocean. Business as usual is a projection of emissions without new policies, so the 2030 target is measured against that projection rather than a past year.
