What is Mauritania's budget for 2026?

Mauritania's original finance law for 2026 set state budget resources at MRU 128.79 billion, excluding deficit financing, and budget spending at MRU 132.18 billion, according to the Ministry of Finance's report on state financial operations for the first half of 2026 (in Arabic). The budget assumes economic growth of about 5.1% in 2026. The ministry has since published an amended finance law for 2026.

2026 is the first budget prepared entirely as a programme budget, which links appropriations to policy objectives and results, according to the ministry. The ministry publishes the finance law, amended finance laws and half-yearly execution reports on its site.

Does Mauritania have a budget deficit?

Mauritania's state budget recorded an overall surplus of MRU 4.54 billion, including grants, in January to June 2026, according to the Ministry of Finance's half-year report on state financial operations. Revenue and grants were MRU 63.61 billion, 24.7% more than a year earlier and 49.4% of the annual estimate. Tax revenue was MRU 46.47 billion, 54.6% of the annual target. Spending and net lending were MRU 59.07 billion, 44.7% of appropriations and 22.2% more than a year earlier.

A half-year surplus does not mean the year will end in surplus: the ministry notes that revenue collection and spending follow seasonal patterns, so execution rates should be read with caution. The original 2026 budget planned spending above resources.
