When it publishes
The monthly debt report is published around the 15th of each month, covering the month two months earlier. ECB rate decisions follow monetary policy meetings about every six weeks.
How to use it to check a claim
- Debt in euros comes from Banca d'Italia; the debt-to-GDP ratio for a full year is in Istat's EU notification.
- Figures in brackets in the monthly report are provisional.
- For mortgage rates, check whether a figure is for new loans and fixed or variable rate.
Common mistakes
- Dividing a monthly debt level by annual GDP from a different period.
- Saying Banca d'Italia sets Italian interest rates; the ECB does.
Who calculates Italy's public debt?
Banca d'Italia compiles general government debt; Istat compiles the deficit and GDP, and both are reported to the European Commission.
Where can I find the BTP-Bund spread?
Government bond yields are market data. Banca d'Italia's statistical database and the ECB Data Portal publish Italian and German government bond yields.
