MoSPI and the National Statistics Office: India's official statistics

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), through the National Statistics Office (NSO), publishes India's GDP estimates, the consumer price index, the index of industrial production, the Periodic Labour Force Survey and large household surveys such as the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey. Its eSankhyiki portal brings the data together for download. The census and Sample Registration System are run separately by the Office of the Registrar General.

When it publishes

MoSPI publishes an advance release calendar on its website. CPI is released monthly and GDP estimates quarterly. MoSPI's website relies on scripts and could not be read by automated tools when checked.

How to use it to check a claim

  1. Check whether a GDP growth figure is year-on-year for a quarter, for a fiscal year (April to March), or a projection.
  2. For inflation, check whether the claim uses the all-India combined CPI, rural or urban, and which base year.
  3. For unemployment, check the PLFS status (current weekly status or usual status), the age group and rural or urban coverage.

Common mistakes

When is India's CPI released?

The NSO releases CPI each month on dates in MoSPI's advance release calendar; the RBI's policy statements also cite the latest figure.

Where can I download MoSPI data?

Use the eSankhyiki portal or the PDF and Excel files attached to each press release.
