Ethiopia: crime and justice
4 answers, 3 from Ethiopia's own official bodies, with a link to each figure.
What is the murder rate in Ethiopia?
Ethiopia recorded 8.5 intentional homicides per 100,000 people in 2012, the latest year available in the World Bank World Development Indicators, which draw on UN Office on Drugs and Crime data.
No more recent national homicide figure is published in the international series, and the Federal Police Commission website could not be reached on 15 October 2026, so current police-recorded crime figures could not be checked. The UNODC data portal carries the series for comparison with other countries.
How many federal prisons are there in Ethiopia?
The Federal Prison Commission runs six correctional and remand centres, according to its website: a high-security centre at Gelan in Oromia for people serving more than 10 years, a women's centre and a remand centre at Kilinto in Akaki Kality, Addis Ababa, the Zeway centre at Batu for sentences of 5 to 10 years, Shewa Robit in Amhara for 6 months to 4 years, and Dire Dawa, which holds people serving life sentences and remand prisoners.
These hold people sentenced or remanded by federal courts. Regional states have their own prison commissions, whose officers are also trained at the federal Prison Police Training Institution, so the federal centres are only part of the system. The commission does not publish a prisoner count on its site.
How many people are caught crossing Ethiopia's borders illegally?
10,530 Ethiopians and foreign nationals attempting to enter or leave Ethiopia illegally were intercepted in the first nine months of fiscal year 2025/26 (EFY 2018), according to the Immigration and Citizenship Service Director General message. Another 3,638 people were apprehended for trying to obtain passports with forged documents or false proof of nationality.
ICS says those caught were subjected to legal measures. The figures are the agency's own administrative counts, not court convictions. The Ethiopian Statistical Service migration key findings describe a shift in irregular migration from the southern route towards an eastern route, with Saudi Arabia the main intended destination of migrants reported missing.
