How much is council tax in Wales?
Average Band D council tax in Wales for 2026-27 is £2,283, up £113 or 5.2% on the year, ranging from £2,013 in Cardiff to £2,594 in Merthyr Tydfil, according to the Welsh Government's council tax levels release of 24 March 2026. The figure includes county council, police and community council charges.
Wales has nine bands, A to I, based on 2003 property values, unlike England's eight bands based on 1991 values. Data for every council and band are on StatsWales, and earlier years are on the council tax levels page.
Band D is a standard comparison point, not the typical bill. For England's figures, see council tax increases.
