What is Scotland's GDP?

The Scottish Government publishes onshore GDP for Scotland monthly and quarterly. Its first estimate for April to June 2026, published on 26 August 2026, showed real growth of 0.7% on the quarter and 1.1% on the year, against 0.4% and 1.2% for the UK.

Cash GDP and GDP per person, including estimates with a share of North Sea oil and gas output, are in the Quarterly National Accounts on the economy statistics page. The ONS publishes annual GDP for all UK nations and regions on a consistent basis in its regional GDP bulletin.

Terms used in this answer

  • Gross value added (GVA)
The value of goods and services produced, minus the cost of the inputs used to make them. GDP is GVA plus taxes on products, minus subsidies.
  • ITL regions (International Territorial Levels)
The UK's official system of statistical regions, which replaced the EU's NUTS system. ITL1 is the nine English regions plus Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • Chained volume measure
The ONS method for showing GDP and other output after removing price changes, by linking year-to-year volume changes together. This is 'real' GDP.
  • Quarter-on-quarter change
The change from one three-month period to the next, such as April to June compared with January to March. Used for GDP growth.
  • Revisions
Changes to previously published figures, made when more complete data, improved methods or updated seasonal factors become available. A normal part of official statistics.
  • Provisional figures
Early estimates published before all data are in, so users get timely figures. They are expected to be updated when later data arrive.
