Where can I find official UK fuel prices?

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero publishes average UK pump prices for petrol and diesel every week, with a long time series, and monthly prices with a breakdown of duty and VAT.

Check whether a claim uses the weekly average or a single day, and whether it compares pence per litre including or excluding duty and VAT.

Terms used in this answer

  • Cash terms
A money figure stated at the prices of the time it refers to, with no adjustment for inflation. Also called nominal terms.
  • Real terms
A figure adjusted to remove the effect of inflation, so amounts from different years can be compared by what they would buy rather than their face value.
  • Mean
The total of all values divided by how many there are. Often what people mean by 'average', it can be pulled up or down by a few extreme values.
  • Year-on-year change
The change between a figure for one period and the same period twelve months earlier, such as March this year compared with March last year.
