Where can I find road traffic statistics?
The Department for Transport publishes road traffic estimates for Great Britain each year and quarterly, by vehicle type and road type. Its road traffic statistics website shows counts at individual count points and has a free API.
Reported road casualties, including deaths, are published separately each year from police reports.
The latest figure
The newest value is at Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). More on it: Average UK petrol and diesel price.
When is the next figure out?
Weekly on Tuesdays at 9:30am for Monday's prices. The GOV.UK Content API JSON lists the current CSV, Excel and XML attachments; the CSV attachment URL changes each week (the 2018 onwards CSV has columns for petrol and diesel prices, duty and VAT)
Every official release due in the next two weeks is on the release calendar.
Terms used in this answer
- Cash termsA money figure stated at the prices of the time it refers to, with no adjustment for inflation. Also called nominal terms.
- Real termsA figure adjusted to remove the effect of inflation, so amounts from different years can be compared by what they would buy rather than their face value.
- MeanThe total of all values divided by how many there are. Often what people mean by 'average', it can be pulled up or down by a few extreme values.
- Year-on-year changeThe change between a figure for one period and the same period twelve months earlier, such as March this year compared with March last year.
Where the figures come from
- Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) energy and emissions statistics, and Ofgem energy price cap dataWhere to find official UK energy prices, fuel prices, electricity generation, greenhouse gas emissions and the Ofgem price cap, and how to check claims.
- Department for Transport statistics and Office of Rail and Road official rail statisticsHow to find and use official DfT data on road traffic, casualties, vehicles and buses, and ORR rail data on journeys, punctuality and stations.
