How big are the UK armed forces?
The MOD's Quarterly Service Personnel Statistics are the official count. The release for 1 July 2026 reported a total UK Armed Forces strength of 182,980, of which 127,060 were full-time trained regulars, plus 28,880 trained reservists in the Future Reserves 2020 group.
The tables split these figures by Royal Navy and Royal Marines, Army and RAF, and show how many people joined and left in the previous 12 months. Each release is updated every three months.
Totals change a lot depending on what is counted. "Trained strength", "full-time trained strength", total regular strength and figures including reserves, Gurkhas and recruits in training are all quoted. Army size claims, in particular, are often compared against targets set in different years.
When is the next figure out?
MOD, FCDO and Home Office statistics are pre-announced on the GOV.UK research and statistics calendar and published at 9:30am. Personnel statistics come out quarterly; provisional aid figures in April and final ones in the autumn; NATO's tables usually appear around its summer summit. The terrorism powers release is moving to a six-monthly cycle.
Every official release due in the next two weeks is on the release calendar.
