How the IMF measures it

The IMF's GDP in US dollars is the value of all goods and services produced in a country in a calendar year, at that year's prices, converted from the national currency into US dollars at market exchange rates.

IMF figures for recent years can include IMF staff estimates; the IMF revises them in each April and October edition.

Why this differs from the UK's own figures

The ONS publishes UK GDP in pounds. Converting it to US dollars, as the IMF does to compare countries, means the UK's dollar figure and its rank move with the exchange rate: a fall in the pound against the dollar lowers the UK's dollar GDP even if output in pounds is unchanged. The ONS's headline figures are growth rates rather than the size of the economy.
