What is the population of Wales?
The population of Wales was estimated at 3,175,200 in mid-2025, a fall of 2,800 on the year and the first decrease since mid-2015, according to the ONS population estimates for England and Wales, published on 29 July 2026. Deaths exceeded births; migration added people but did not offset the gap.
The same release gives Wales's median age as 43.2 years and the share aged 65 and over as 22.2%. Figures for each local authority are in the ONS tables, and the Welsh Government publishes population projections for Wales.
Population estimates are revised as migration data improve, so check which vintage a figure comes from. For the UK total, see the UK population question.
