How much is stamp duty on a house?

In England and Northern Ireland, Stamp Duty Land Tax on a home you will own as your only property is 0% on the first £125,000, 2% on the next £125,000, 5% from £250,001 to £925,000, 10% to £1.5 million and 12% above that, according to GOV.UK. First-time buyers pay nothing up to £300,000 on homes worth £500,000 or less. Buyers of additional homes usually pay 5% on top.

Scotland and Wales have their own taxes. Revenue Scotland's Land and Buildings Transaction Tax starts above £145,000; the Welsh Revenue Authority's Land Transaction Tax starts above £225,000.

Each rate applies only to the slice of the price within that band, so the tax is not a flat percentage of the price. HMRC's calculator gives the exact amount.
