How do Scottish Parliament elections work?
The Scottish Parliament has 129 MSPs elected by the additional member system: 73 represent constituencies, elected by first past the post, and 56 are elected from eight regional party lists to make the overall result more proportional. Each voter has two votes.
The most recent election was on 7 May 2026. The Scottish Parliament's official results page lists the SNP with 58 seats, Labour and Reform UK with 17 each, the Scottish Greens with 15, the Conservatives with 12 and the Liberal Democrats with 10, plus every constituency and regional result. Results from 1999 onwards are on the elections page, which says the next election is expected in May 2031.
A majority needs 65 seats. Seat shares and vote shares differ, so check which a claim cites.
