How many members are there in the House of Lords?
The House of Lords has no fixed size: it changes as new peers are appointed and members retire or die. On 13 October 2026 Parliament's state of the parties data listed 795 members: 772 life peers and 23 bishops. By party, 247 were Conservative, 233 Labour, 154 Crossbench and 80 Liberal Democrat. The current count is on the Lords state of the parties page.
The House of Lords (Hereditary Peers) Act 2026, which received Royal Assent on 18 March 2026, provides for the exclusion of the remaining hereditary peers, and the same data listed none. Members of the Lords are not salaried; most can claim a flat daily allowance for days they attend, and the House publishes what each member claims. Totals differ depending on whether members on leave of absence are counted, so say which figure you use.
When is the next figure out?
Hansard is published on every sitting day, with Commons debates normally online within a few hours and division lists soon after each vote. Written answers appear on the questions site once departments submit them, usually the same day. The Commons register of interests is updated regularly, roughly fortnightly when the House sits, and MPs must register new interests within 28 days. IPSA publishes MPs' business costs every two months, covering claims processed four to five months earlier, and announces MPs' pay for the year from April. Parliament's calendar shows sitting days and recess dates.
Every official release due in the next two weeks is on the release calendar.
