Is social media being banned for under-16s in the UK?
The government announced on 15 June 2026 that social media companies will no longer be able to offer their services to children under 16, and set out its plans in its July 2026 response to the Growing up in the online world consultation.
The response says the government intends to lay the first regulations before Parliament by the end of 2026, with the restrictions expected to take effect in spring 2027, using powers in the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026. It also plans limits on livestreaming and on strangers contacting children across a wider range of services, including gaming, and will work with Ofcom on enforcement.
Until regulations are made and in force, the existing Online Safety Act duties apply. Statutory instruments, once made, are published on legislation.gov.uk.
