How do I find the crime rate in my area?
Enter your postcode on police.uk to see a map of street-level crimes reported to police in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with the outcome of each case where known. Locations are approximate to protect victims' privacy.
The same data is free to download, or through an API, at data.police.uk. These are crimes recorded by police, so differences between areas also reflect reporting and recording. In Scotland, Police Scotland and the Scottish Government publish recorded crime by council area.

Terms used in this answer
- Rate per 100,000The number of events divided by the population and multiplied by 100,000, so areas of different sizes can be compared on a like-for-like basis.
- OutlierA value that is unusually far from the rest of the data. It may be a genuine extreme or an error, and it can distort averages and trends.
- Data suppressionWithholding or rounding small numbers in published tables so that individuals cannot be identified, or because estimates are too unreliable to publish.
- Lower layer super output area (LSOA)A small statistical area in England and Wales, typically home to 1,000 to 3,000 people, used to publish local data such as deprivation and census results.
- Police recorded crimeCrimes reported to and recorded by the police, following national counting rules. It reflects reporting and recording practice as well as crime itself.
- Survey sampleThe group of people or businesses selected to take part in a survey, chosen so that their answers can be used to estimate figures for the whole population.
