How the IMF measures it
The IMF's GDP per head at purchasing power parity is GDP divided by population, converted into international dollars using purchasing power parities: rates that adjust for differences in price levels between countries, so that a dollar buys the same amount everywhere. Values are at current prices for each year.
IMF figures for recent years can include IMF staff estimates; the IMF revises them in each April and October edition.
Countries compared: The 38 member countries of the OECD. The table uses the latest year for which the UK and at least three-quarters of the countries the IMF covers have a figure, so every value is for the same period.
Why this differs from the UK's own figures
The ONS publishes GDP per head in pounds, adjusted for inflation, and reports its quarterly change. The IMF converts each country's GDP per head into international dollars with purchasing power parities, which take account of price differences between countries. So the IMF's UK value is not the ONS's figure in another currency, and it is not the same as GDP per head converted at market exchange rates.
