The Parish Council The Role of a Councillor Becoming a Parish Councillor is a rewarding and valued form of public service. All Councillors contribute to the work of the Parish Council by: • Having a say about the things they care about • Putting forward ideas for better services • Responding to the needs and views of parishioners • Seeking the best outcome to local issues • Getting involved in decision making • Helping to make Woodton a better place to live! The Parish Council meets approximately eight times per financial year as standard practice, normally on a Tuesday at 7.30pm at Woodton Village Hall. Councillors are expected to attend meetings on a regular basis. Guidance for new Councillors A Councillor is a member of the Council and is normally elected for a term of four years. People of any political or religious persuasion are eligible to become a Councillor, although their personal views should not extend into their Parish Council work. A Councillor is an unpaid voluntary role. They are elected to represent the interests of the local community as a whole and promote a harmonious local environment. The number of elected Councillors depends on the size of the area. In Woodton we are able to have 7 Councillors. Local Councils are the first tier of governance and are the first point of contact for anyone concerned with a community issue. They are democratically elected local authorities and exist in England, Wales and Scotland. The term ‘local council’ is synonymous with ‘Parish Council’, ‘Town Council’ and ‘Community Council’. Parish Council Register of Interests All Parish Councillors are required by law to complete a register of interest form to register their Disclosable Pecuniary Interests and the Disclosable Pecuniary Interests of their spouses or civil partners or persons with whom they live in that capacity. Guidance – Openness and transparency on personal interests: guidance for councillors Our Councillors’ Register of Members’ Disclosable Pecuniary Interests can be found on the District Council’s website. Councillors Currently all Members live within the Parish of Woodton and are pro-active for the benefit of the village attending not only the parish council meetings but also meetings with other organisations. Members are also actively involved in work throughout the village. Parish Councillors Jane Wickstead Chair of Parish Council 01508 482664 / 07786 106789 Richard Denny Responsibility for Footpaths 07887 790709 Adam Fairhurst Responsibility for Ravens Den Play Area 07919 886216 John Turner Woodton Village Hall and Woodton Community Wood Representative 07852 461223 Steven Webb Responsibility for SAM2 signs 07595 220392 Caroline Wells Village Hall Treasurer and Representative Woodton Parish Council Facebook page administrator 07921 220217 District Councillors Brendon Bernard Brendon.bernard@southnorfolkandbroadland.gov.uk Chris Brown Chris.Brown@southnorfolkandbroadland.gov.uk County Councillor George Boyd george.boyd.cllr@norfolk.gov.uk Defibrillator located at entrance to Woodton village hall, NR35 2NG Email us at: clerk@woodtonparishcouncil.gov.uk Telephone: 01508 493134 Parish Clerk: Yvonne Wonnacott Website Accessibility Statement Privacy Statement Please note that the Parish Clerk works part-time and is contracted for an average of 6 hours per week.
