My son lives in Ely (I think this is the closest place to Ely that he would allow !!!) When I moved up here from Brighton I met the wonderful Sally, through choir, and she introduced me to lots of people and the Flower Festival a truly wonderful affair, so I settled here quickly and have never regretted the decision. I still visit Sussex every year to go to the Opera. This is a beautiful village that needs it’s essence preserving. When I was asked to join the parish council I thought it was a good way to contribute to this splendid village. Email Councillor Councillor Richard Chamberlain I am a retired engineer who has lived in Hemingford Abbots for nearly 30 years. I am a member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society. My career started at Marconi Avionics in Rochester and in the early 1990s I started my first company specializing in RF switches and encryption systems which we sold around the world. I have recently sold my second business and now find I have some time on my hands. Our village is beautiful but fragile. Whilst change offers many possibilities and opportunities it also comes with pitfalls and issues. I, as a parish councillor, will listen to the villagers and will act appropriately having taken into account the wishes of the parishioners and in the best interest of Hemingford Abbots. I think we face interesting times and I am excited to try and help. Email Councillor Councillor Marcus Whewell Chair My family has lived in the village continuously since 1995. I joined the Council in 2017 to help contribute to maintaining and improving the quality of life for all its residents and I consider it an honour and a privilege to represent the parish and serve the local community. My background includes roles in strategic planning, finance, business development, compliance, operations, and marketing / communications. I have been a director of an international ‘not for profit’ organization, several consumer products businesses, and also one of the UK’s leading media groups. I currently lead a small charity based in Cambridge, dedicated to promoting digital inclusion across the county. I feel very fortunate to live in such a wonderful location, and hope that the Parish Council can continue to help protect, connect and energize the parish – and that we can all work together to enhance our sense of community and shared spaces. My career has been spent in IT initially with technical or project management roles but mostly on the commercial side with solution sales into Government and the not-for-profit sectors. Having worked from home for many years, the day job is heading up business development for a software organisation based in Dundee and when not looking after our daughters, I’m part of a pub quiz team enjoying some minor successes locally at the Axe & Compass, and nationally just failing to win on TV’s “Eggheads” in 2022. (Channel 5 – Season 2 – EP49 – ‘Albert Camouse’ on catch-up, spoiler alert!) We love the village, believe it will be a great place for our children to grow up in, and want to help shape and protect that in whatever way we can, with the help of the Parish Council. One of our visits brought us to the village on the Platinum Jubilee weekend where we were delighted to find the community celebrating together in the glorious sunshine. It’s this sense of active fellowship that has drawn me to the parish council, where I hope to learn more about our community and lend my energy to keeping it a wonderful place for us all to live. I’ve had a variety of jobs, including working with homeless young women in South East London, managing the bars department of a large music venue, working for Cambridgeshire Libraries, and most recently running my personal training business in Cambridge. I enjoy working with people to promote positive change and worthwhile experiences and look forward to having many such opportunities through my role with the parish council.
