Resident Minister Breaks Ground for North West Regional Police Headquarters in Port Loko

Port Loko, Thursday 29 January 2026 — In a landmark development for policing in the North West Region, the Resident Minister, North West Region, Mr Umaru Bon Wurie, on Thursday officially turned the sod for the construction of the North West Regional Police Administrative Headquarters in Port Loko City.

The project was launched under the leadership of the Inspector General of Police, Mr William Fayia Sellu, and spearheaded by the Regional Commander North West, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Joseph Ibrahim Lahai, alongside other senior police commanders.

The construction of the Regional Headquarters follows years of operational challenges, including inadequate office space and persistent rent-related difficulties, which have negatively affected administrative efficiency. The new facility is expected to provide a permanent and conducive structure to enhance police administration and service delivery across the region.

The sod-turning ceremony attracted a broad cross-section of dignitaries, including the Resident Minister, who pledged one hundred (100) bags of cement in support of the project. Also present were the Mayor of Port Loko City Council, Mr Alie Badara Tarawally, Paramount Chiefs from Maforkie and Bekeh Loko Chiefdoms, and other key stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, Mayor Tarawally commended the Sierra Leone Police in Port Loko for their continuous efforts in maintaining peace and security in the city. He described the construction of the Regional Headquarters as a laudable initiative that would benefit not only the police but also the people of Port Loko and the North West Region at large.

The Mayor further called on all stakeholders to take collective ownership of the project and ensure close supervision, stressing that it is not an individual endeavour nor solely for the benefit of the current officers deployed in Port Loko, as police personnel may be transferred at any time. He concluded by pledging his support towards the successful completion of the project.

In a show of partnership, the Deputy Director of the Amazonian Initiative Movement (AIM) also donated fifty (50) bags of cement to kick-start the construction.

The North West Regional Police Headquarters project is expected to significantly strengthen police administration and operational coordination in the region once completed.
