The United Kingdom welcomes the adoption of resolution 2835, renewing UNSMIL’s mandate for 12 months.
\n\nWe thank Council members for engaging constructively in negotiations.
\n\nThis mandate will strengthen UNSMIL’s ability to advance a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process.
\n\nIt will give SRSG Tetteh a mandate to continue advancing her roadmap.
\n\nThis resolution urges Libyan parties to fulfil their commitments made under the ‘Smaller Convening’ agreement, which will move Libya closer to free, fair, transparent, and inclusive elections within 24 months.
\n\nIt builds momentum behind the reunification of Libyan institutions, including its judicial, military and security institutions.
\n\nIt provides a clear basis for UNSMIL to support Libyan parties to establish a single executive authority and sends a clear message that Libyan actors should not undermine that work.
\n\nAnd it recognises the importance of UNSMIL’s work on human rights and the rule of law and encourages UNSMIL to continue to promote the full, equal, meaningful, and safe participation of women in the political process.
\n\nMadam President, the United Kingdom reiterates our full support for UNSMIL and for SRSG Tetteh’s work to advance the political process.
\n\nWe urge all parties to honour the commitments that they have made to provide Libyans the democratic choice, the economic opportunity, and the security that they seek.
\nThe Ambassador’s role is to represent the UK within an international organisation, engaging with every other country or organisation that belongs to or observes the body. The Ambassador is also responsible for the direction and work of the Mission. Ambassadors to multilateral missions are often referred to as ‘Permanent Representatives’.
